Backlink indexer reference wiki
Published · By IndexChex
In brief
A backlink indexer is a service that gets the third-party pages carrying your links crawled by Googlebot, so Google can decide whether to index them. This wiki explains how indexers work, why links fail to index, how long indexing takes, which methods are safe and how to verify results.
Overview
Links on other websites only help if Google knows the page they sit on. Many such pages, from guest posts to citations, are published deep inside sites Google visits rarely, and the person who wants them indexed has no way to ask Google directly. Backlink indexers address that gap by causing a crawl. They cannot make Google keep a page, which is why this wiki spends as much space on verification and failure causes as on submission.
Entries are written from Google's published documentation, with inference labelled as such. The site is published by IndexChex, a backlink indexer and index checker; see ownership and editorial policy.
Where to start
Readers new to the topic should begin with the definition entry and then the mechanics entry, since most other pages assume the distinction between a crawl and an index decision. Readers diagnosing a specific campaign usually need the problems section: a link that has not appeared after the normal waiting period is either undiscovered, blocked, canonicalised or rejected on quality, and each case has a different remedy.
