Free backlink indexers
Published · By IndexChex
Free backlink indexers are tools that submit URLs at no charge, usually by pinging services, generating pages that link to the URL, or offering a small free quota of a paid tool. Most give no crawl confirmation and some create low-quality links. Google's own free channels work only for sites you own.
What counts as a free indexer
"Free backlink indexer" covers several different things that share only a price of zero:
- Web forms that ping services. The user pastes URLs and the site sends them to blog ping servers, RSS aggregators or similar endpoints.
- Link-page generators. The tool creates pages, often on its own domain or on free hosting, that link to every submitted URL, hoping Googlebot follows those links.
- Freemium quotas. A paid service lets new accounts submit a small number of URLs without paying.
- Do-it-yourself methods. Sharing the URL on social platforms, linking it from a crawled page you control, or adding it to a sitemap you own.
None of these resemble the managed process described in how backlink indexers work, where a service generates crawl signals and reports what happened. Free tools mostly stop at "sent".
Why most free methods underperform
Pings carry little weight
Ping-based tools inherit an old technique whose usefulness has declined. Google itself retired its sitemap ping endpoint, writing in 2023 that "the vast majority of the submissions lead to spam." Unauthenticated pings to third-party services are weaker still because Google is not obliged to read them at all. The history of backlink indexing traces how pings became popular and then faded.
Generated pages are low-quality links
A free tool that builds a page linking to a thousand submitted URLs creates exactly the kind of thin, automated page Google tends not to index. If it is indexed, your link is now associated with a spam page. Google's spam policies list "using automated programs or services to create links to your site" as a link scheme, and an automatically generated link page fits that description. The safety question is discussed further in are backlink indexers safe.
No feedback
Free tools seldom show whether Googlebot fetched the URL, let alone whether it was indexed. Users are left to check separately, which takes time that often exceeds the cost of a paid submission.
Free methods Google supports
For pages on sites you own, Google provides free routes:
| Method | Works for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| XML sitemap in Search Console or robots.txt | Owned sites | Needs accurate lastmod to be useful |
| Request Indexing in URL Inspection | Owned properties | Daily cap per property |
| Internal links from crawled pages | Owned sites | Depends on site crawl frequency |
| IndexNow | Owned sites, non-Google engines | Google does not participate |
The ownership requirement is the catch for backlinks. The linking page belongs to someone else, so none of these apply; see URL Inspection limits and IndexNow and backlinks.
For third-party pages the only free, policy-safe option is indirect: put a link to the page somewhere Google already crawls often, such as a social profile or a page on your own site, and wait.
Free versus paid
| Aspect | Free tools | Paid indexers |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Nothing in money | Per URL or per credit |
| Mechanism | Pings, generated pages, quotas | Managed crawl signals |
| Crawl confirmation | Rare | Common |
| Built-in index checks | Rare | Some tools |
| Risk of spam association | Higher for link-page generators | Depends on vendor method |
The alternatives site compares specific free and paid tools with sources on its free vs paid entry. The category as a whole is defined in what is a backlink indexer.
A note on IndexChex
IndexChex, which publishes this wiki, is a paid tool with no free trial or signup credits. Its pricing is covered on backlink indexer pricing models. Whatever tool is used, free or paid, checking the result independently is the only way to know whether it worked; verifying backlink indexation explains how.
FAQ
Do free backlink indexers work?
Sometimes, for pages that would have been found soon anyway. They rarely confirm a crawl, and methods based on generating link pages can attach your link to spam. Results should be checked independently.
Is there a free way to index backlinks on sites I don't own?
Not through Google. Search Console and the Indexing API need ownership. The free options left are indirect: sharing or linking the page from places Google already crawls, and waiting.
Does IndexChex have a free plan?
No. IndexChex has no free trial and no signup credits; the smallest purchase is a paid monthly plan or one-time credit pack.
